Characteristics and shielding principles of aluminum foil tape

2025-12-23

Aluminum foil tape possesses the characteristic of shielding electromagnetic waves and is widely used in industries such as refrigerators, air conditioners, automobiles, petrochemicals, bridges, hotels, and electronics. The shielding principle of aluminum foil tape is introduced as follows:

1. Reflection loss caused by impedance mismatch on the surface of the shielding material.

2. Transmission loss or absorption loss caused by the absorption of electromagnetic energy when electromagnetic waves are transmitted inside the shielding material.

3. Multiple reflection losses caused by multiple reflections of electromagnetic waves between the inner surfaces of the shielding material. These points show the three basic factors affecting the shielding effectiveness of the material: the electrical conductivity, magnetic permeability, and thickness of the material. These are also the issues and breakthroughs that must be considered in the research of shielding materials.

For electromagnetic shielding structures, the shielding effectiveness is also related to the structure, shape, and airtightness. For specific problems, we also need to consider the frequency of the electromagnetic waves being shielded and the nature of the field source.

Because aluminum foil is a metal, it is inherently conductive.  Based on the above shielding principles, we understand why it is suitable for electromagnetic shielding in various electronic products such as transformers, mobile phones, computers, PDAs, POPs, LED displays, laptops, and copiers.
