The Difference Between Water-Based Glue, Oil-Based Glue, and Hot Melt Glue

To deepen everyone's understanding of adhesive tape, I will share my analysis of the three types of adhesives used in tape, hoping it will be helpful: Water-based coating adhesives use water as a solvent to emulsify acrylic or polyurethane resins using specialized emulsification equipment. Their biggest advantages are: wide variety, environmental friendliness, and low price. Many coatings now use water-based adhesives, such as general water-soluble PA, water-soluble PU, as well as film adhesives, oil-feel/wax-feel adhesives, and functional pastes like color pastes. Water-based adhesives, with their functionality, environmental friendliness, and low price, represent the future direction of coatings. Disadvantages include poor film-forming properties, poor wash fastness, and the inability to apply hot melt adhesives to PU.

Oil-based coating adhesives use oil-based solvents (toluene, DMF, methyl ethyl ketone, etc.) to dissolve acrylic or polyurethane. Their advantages are good film-forming properties and good fastness; PU can be applied with hot melt adhesives, making them the most commonly used coating adhesives currently. The disadvantage is that due to the use of oil-based solvents, it lacks environmental friendliness, especially with the current rise in oil prices, which has led to a surge in the price of oil-based solvents. Most coating adhesives, due to their high cost, use inferior oil-based solvents, resulting in non-compliance with environmental standards. Furthermore, as environmental standards in various countries continue to tighten, the environmental requirements for coating adhesives are becoming increasingly stringent.

Hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesive is a type of pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is mainly made by mixing synthetic rubber, resin, and rubber oil, heating them to a molten state, and then coating them onto substrates such as cotton paper, cloth, or plastic film. Its biggest advantage is its low cost. The disadvantage is that its adhesion is significantly affected by temperature. It is mainly used for various types of sealing boxes, paper packaging, beverage bottle labels, sealing aluminum foil, flexible packaging, and other packaging; environmentally friendly paper pallets, etc., and is suitable for various materials. This sealing adhesive has strong adhesion to various PET and PP transparent boxes, films, and non-woven products, including those that have been varnished, polished, calendered, or laminated with PP. It is suitable for cosmetic packaging, food packaging, cigarette packaging, Tetra Pak beverage packaging, furniture edge sealing, electronics industry, automotive interior sealing, headlight manufacturing, windshield assembly, non-woven sanitary napkins, diapers, insoles, disposable daily necessities, coated composite trademark paper, double-sided label tape, mouse traps, flypaper, wood flooring, carpet coating, band-aids, medical breathable tape, color box packaging, carton packaging adhesive, and adhesive hook and loop fasteners. It exhibits excellent thermal stability, is free of impurities, and is easy to handle. It also boasts excellent weather resistance. The aluminum foil sealing hot melt adhesive has unique water-resistant and waterproof properties.
