What are the performance advantages of fiber tape compared with other tapes?

2025-05-21

According to statistics from the China Adhesives and Adhesive Tapes Industry Association, my country's tape sales have maintained a growth trend. In 2021, tape sales were about 52 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.8%. It is expected that sales will reach 62.7 billion yuan in 2025. At present, China is the world's largest tape producer, and the scale of the industry is still expanding. Tapes have a wide range of applications and a bright future market prospect.

Tapes are conventional consumer products with a huge downstream application market and are widely used in civil, industrial and medical fields. In the civil market, tapes are mainly used for household daily use and building decoration. my country's huge population base provides a broad market space for tapes. In the industrial market, tapes are mainly used in automobile manufacturing, electronic component manufacturing, shipbuilding, aerospace and other fields.

Most of the single-sided tapes we usually know use a single-component backing material, among which the most common ones are PET tape, PP tape, PE protective film, and PVC floor tape. The common feature of these tapes is that they use a plastic backing material. One of the major characteristics of plastic is that it has ductility, which makes this type of tape very tough and can be stretched but not easily broken. We can also see some aluminum foil tapes, lead foil tapes or copper foil tapes with a metallic luster. These metal materials have almost no ductility as the backing material of the tape, resulting in it not being able to be stretched, showing the characteristics of being strong but not tough.

So is there a material that can be both strong and tough? The answer is today's protagonist - fiber tape. Fiber tape is generally a single-sided tape, and its backing material is a composite material reinforced with fiber filaments. Depending on the different fiber filaments, it can have different performances, usually used to enhance dimensional stability and tensile strength. There are two types of commonly used fiber filaments: glass fiber filaments and polyester fiber filaments.

Fiber tape uses high-strength glass fiber yarn or cloth as reinforcing material, PET film (OPP film) as base material, and specially configured high-performance pressure-sensitive synthetic rubber as adhesive, and is made through process treatment and coating. Common fiber tapes include striped fiber tapes and grid fiber tapes, but there will be performance differences in specific applications. Therefore, when choosing, it is best to communicate with the manufacturer and choose the product that suits you.

Fiber tape can be divided into two types according to the arrangement of glass fibers: striped fiber tape and grid fiber tape. At the same time, there are also single-sided fiber tape and double-sided fiber tape with adhesive applied on one or both sides. In addition, according to specific application scenarios, fiber tape manufacturers will choose materials and adhesives with different viscosity and peel strength to meet customers' various strength and viscosity requirements.
