What is Double Sided Tape?

The primary function of Double Sided Tape is to bond the surfaces (contact areas) of two objects together. Depending on specific application requirements, this bonding can be categorized as either temporary fixation or permanent adhesion. Double Sided Tape is manufactured as an adhesive roll utilizing a substrate—such as paper, cloth, film, or foam—onto which an adhesive is uniformly coated on both sides. It consists of three main components: the substrate, the adhesive, and a release liner (or release film). Depending on the specific substrate chosen, some materials may require surface treatment prior to the application of the adhesive coating.

Due to the wide variety of available substrates and adhesives—and the ability to combine them in numerous ways—double-sided tape encompasses a broader range of varieties than any other type of adhesive tape.

Overview of Double-Sided Tape Classifications and Characteristics:

1.  PET-Substrate Double-Sided Tape: Characterized by excellent temperature resistance and strong shear strength. Typically, it withstands long-term temperatures of 100–125°C and short-term temperatures of 150–200°C. With a general thickness ranging from 0.048 to 0.2 mm, it is suitable for bonding nameplates, LCD components, decorative items, and ornamental parts.

2.  Non-Woven Fabric Substrate Double-Sided Tape: Features excellent adhesion and processability. It typically withstands long-term temperatures of 70–80°C and short-term temperatures of 100–120°C. With a general thickness ranging from 0.08 to 0.15 mm, it is suitable for bonding nameplates and laminating plastics. It is widely used across various industries—including automotive, mobile phones, electrical appliances, sponges, rubber, signage, paper products, and toys—as well as for the assembly of home appliance and electronic instrument components, and for display screen lenses.

3.  Substrate-Free (Transfer) Double-Sided Tape: Offers superior bonding effects that effectively prevent detachment, along with excellent water resistance. It features good processability and temperature resistance, capable of withstanding short-term temperatures of 204–230°C and general long-term temperatures of 120–145°C. With a general thickness ranging from 0.05 to 0.13 mm, it is suitable for bonding nameplates, control panels, and decorative components. 4. Foam Double-Sided Tape: This refers to a type of double-sided tape created by coating both sides of a foamed substrate with a strong acrylic adhesive, and then covering one side with release paper or release film. If both sides are covered with release paper or release film, it is referred to as "sandwich-style" double-sided tape; this sandwich structure is primarily designed to facilitate the die-cutting process. Foam double-sided tape is characterized by strong adhesion, excellent holding power, good water resistance, high temperature resistance, and strong UV resistance. The foamed substrates are categorized into: EVA foam, PE foam, PU foam, acrylic foam, and high-density foam. The adhesive systems are categorized into: oil-based adhesives, hot-melt adhesives, rubber-based adhesives, and acrylic adhesives.

Hot-Melt Adhesive Film: This product features excellent consistency and uniform bonding thickness; it is solvent-free, easy to process, and offers strong adhesion to a wide variety of materials. It has a thickness of 0.1 mm, appears semi-transparent to amber in color, and has a hot-melt softening point between 116°C and 123°C. It is suitable for bonding nameplates, plastics, and metal hardware components; it also yields excellent results when bonding to uneven surfaces. The recommended initial bonding conditions are: a temperature of 132°C–138°C, a bonding time of 1–2 seconds, and a pressure of 10–20 psi (pounds per square inch).

How to Choose Double-Sided Tape?

When it comes to brands of double-sided tape, there are countless options on the market; however, identifying brands with a solid reputation and guaranteed product quality requires careful comparison. The same applies when selecting the tape itself: you must evaluate your specific needs, compare offerings from multiple suppliers, and choose a tape that is both high-quality and environmentally friendly—this ensures greater peace of mind during use!

Double-sided tapes come in a wide variety of types and have broad applications. However, since each type of tape utilizes a different adhesive material, each is best suited for specific fields of application—as the saying goes, "every trade has its own specialty." Therefore, when purchasing double-sided tape, you should not merely focus on the brand; you must also make your selection based on the specific functional requirements of your intended application! Double-sided tape is a highly practical invention in modern society; whether in the electronics market—for items such as mobile phones and computers—or in the automotive sector—for exterior trim strips and components—or even in the home goods market—for hooks, furniture, and toys—it plays an indispensable role.
