How do you choose double-sided tape?

2025-12-30

When choosing double-sided tape, you need to consider the application scenario, the materials being bonded, performance requirements (such as adhesion and temperature resistance), and budget. The following provides a detailed guide covering application scenarios, core parameter analysis, material comparison, and purchasing tips to help you make the right choice:

I. Selection Based on Application Scenarios

1. Office/Stationery Scenarios

Requirements: Bonding paper and documents, easy to tear, does not damage paper, and leaves no residue.

Recommended types:

Transparent film double-sided tape (e.g., Deli 30412): Approximately 0.1mm thick, moderate adhesion, suitable for sticking sticky notes and photos, and leaves no residue when removed;

Masking tape double-sided tape: Paper-based material, weak adhesion, suitable for temporary marking or easy-tear applications (such as scrapbooking).

2. Handicraft/DIY Making

Requirements: Bonding fabrics, wood, plastics, etc., strong adhesion, and good flexibility.

Recommended types:

Cotton paper double-sided tape (e.g., 3M 9080): Soft and easy to apply, suitable for fabric and cardboard crafts, thickness 0.15-0.2mm;

Foam double-sided tape: Good elasticity and cushioning, suitable for bonding three-dimensional decorative objects (such as handmade flowers and foam boards), thickness 0.5-2mm.

3. Home/Decoration Scenarios

Requirements: Bonding hooks, decorative paintings, baseboards, etc., strong load-bearing capacity, and good weather resistance.

Recommended types:

Strong foam double-sided tape (e.g., 3M VHB): High viscosity, tensile strength, can bear 5-10kg (depending on specific specifications), suitable for tile and glass surfaces;

Acrylic double-sided tape: Water-resistant and temperature-resistant (-20℃~120℃), suitable for humid environments such as bathrooms and kitchens.

4. Industrial/Special Scenarios

Requirements: High temperature resistance, waterproof, anti-aging, and suitable for bonding hard materials such as metal and leather. Recommended Types:

PET Double-Sided Tape: Temperature resistant above 150℃, suitable for fixing electronic components and automotive interior trim;

Thermally Conductive Double-Sided Tape: Combines adhesion and thermal conductivity, used for fixing heat sinks and chips (such as computer CPU cooling).

II. Core Parameter Analysis: 4 Key Dimensions Determine Performance

1. Adhesion Indicators: Initial Adhesion and Holding Power

Initial Adhesion: Instantaneous bonding strength, measured by the "rolling ball tack test" (smaller value indicates stronger adhesion).  For office use, choose 10-20; for industrial use, choose 5 or less;

Holding Power: Long-lasting bonding ability, unit "h" (hours). For example, 3M VHB tape has a holding power of ≥24h, suitable for load-bearing applications.

2. Thickness (mm)

Thin type (0.05-0.1mm): Suitable for paper and lightweight items;

Thick type (0.5-3mm): Suitable for cushioning and filling gaps (such as attaching hooks to uneven walls).

3. Temperature Resistance Range

Normal temperature type: -10℃~70℃ (daily home and office use);

High-temperature type: -20℃~150℃+ (industrial and automotive fields), check parameters (such as "temperature resistance 180℃/30 minutes").
